The University of Stuttgart, Germany, published a communiqué saying that researchers from the university and the University of Wurzburg in Germany used the "compensation base change" analysis method to discover and confirm three new water bear species.

The water bear is only 0.2 mm to 1 mm long, looks like a worm, has several pairs of feet, usually lives in fresh water, moist soil and moss plants, and can survive for a long time in extremely dry or cold environments. At present, nearly 1,000 water bear species have been found, and some species of water bears are very similar to each other, which is difficult to distinguish from the appearance.

German researchers discovered some water bear insects in the Palau in the Pacific, near Fairbanks in northern Alaska, and Kenya. Through a "compensation base change" analysis method with a 93% success rate in species discrimination, the researchers found differences in the ribosomal DNA of these water bears and confirmed that they were all new water bear species.

According to experts, when the living environment gradually becomes water-scarce, dry and cold, the cuticle of the water bear's back will contract and the body will curl up into a barrel, thus stopping the metabolism to resist the long-term extreme environmental hazards. When the external environment improves, water bears can miraculously "resurrect". Researchers believe that these characteristics of water bears have research value in biomedicine and food preservation.
