The well-known robot research and development company-iRobot is working on a new design, the robotic inflatable arm.

Letting the robot use an inflatable arm can not only reduce its own weight, but also lift a variety of loads that are twice its own weight. The research project of iRobot is called Advanced Inflatable Robot, or AIR for short.

The AIR project originated from iRobot's Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV). The weight of the inflatable arm is only half a pound, but it can pick up a load of up to three pounds, like a Gatorade bottle.

Previously, DARPA awarded iRobot a contract worth US $ 625,000 to further develop AIR. The ultimate goal of AIR is lighter, cheaper, more rugged and reliable, and able to work in harsh environments so that it can be used for military purposes.
