Color newspaper printing needs to be standardized

—— Interview with the Press Team of the China Press Association's Printing Committee Before 1998, domestic printing of newspapers all used lead printing rotary machines. At the end of 1993, the printing of flexographic printing machines was completely eliminated. Newspapers used offset printing machines to print newspapers. In order to improve the level of offset printing, the Press Committee of the China Press Association established a panel in 1990. What are the improvements in the printing quality of domestic newspapers in these years? What problems still exist? Not long ago, the reporter interviewed Mr. Cao Shizhong and Mr. Li Yaowen of the evaluation team.
Can you talk about the beginning of the evaluation team?
Cao Shizhong: In 1990, most newspapers in China still use printed ink, and several newspapers use resin editions to print newspapers. At the time, the print quality of the newspapers varied greatly. In order to promote the improvement of the printing quality of newspapers, in the second half of 1990, the China Press Association’s Printing Committee established a panel. At the beginning, the lead-printed newspaper and the offset-printed newspaper were evaluated separately, and the set standards were mainly for printed newspapers. Later, by 1992, most of the newspapers in the country were changed to offset printing, and the old standard was no longer suitable. As a result, the printing press of the People's Daily took the lead to designate a standard for offset printing newspapers. After repeated revisions and solicitation of opinions, the State Bureau of Technical Supervision formally issued the quality requirements and inspection methods for newspaper prints in 1994. Based on this standard, the evaluation team developed a specific method for the quality assessment of newspapers. The newspapers were rated in terms of ink, layout, pictures, and titles.
How many newspapers are participating in the competition?
Cao Shizhong: There are 62 major newspapers in the provinces, special newspapers in special cities, and special economic zones. Twelve of the 13 newspapers in Beijing have participated in the competition. We commented on the newspapers ordered from the post office. Each newspaper was evaluated every 10 days, and 3 cards were evaluated every month. Each quarter, the evaluation results will be published after reviewing the evaluation of the composition of the 10 printers in each locality. For the newspapers that we reviewed, we all mailed the printing company. Some factories also often come to Beijing to understand the rating of their own printed newspapers.
In recent years, the transformation of newspapers and magazines around the country has progressed rapidly, and the quality of newspapers across the country has been greatly improved. Newspaper printing houses are paying more and more attention to the evaluation of newspapers. Before 1995, the quality score of the participating newspapers reached a score of 92. Even now, more than 70% of the newspapers that participated in the report can meet the standards of good standards. This also shows that newspaper printing companies have made great efforts in improving the printing quality of newspapers. In 1999, for example, seven black and white newspapers were rated as high-quality newspapers including the People's Liberation Army Daily, Heilongjiang Daily, People's Daily, Harbin Daily, Dazhong Daily, Henan Daily, and Economic Daily, accounting for 15.96% of the total number of black and white newspapers participating; 17 newspapers, including the Hubei Daily, were rated as good-quality newspapers, accounting for 38.64% of the total; and 18 farmers' daily newspapers were rated as qualified newspapers, accounting for 40.91% of the total.
In recent years, the printing quality of domestic black and white newspapers has greatly improved. With the increase in color newspapers in recent years, in July last year, according to the instructions of the leaders of the China Association of Newspapers, the Printing Committee formulated the industry standard for the printing quality of color newspapers, and the evaluation team evaluated some color newspapers. What is the quality of domestic color newspaper printing? What are the main problems?
Li Yaowen: Of the 62 newspapers that participated in the survey, 19 were printed every day in 1999, so the evaluation team began to evaluate the 19 color newspapers in July last year. There were 36.84% of the total number of participating in the assessment of the Liberation Daily, Zhengzhou Evening News, Qingdao Daily, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, Shenzhen Business Daily, Dalian Daily, Xiamen Daily, and Caipao Daily; and there were 11 good grades, accounting for the total number of color papers 57.89%; another 1 is qualified.
At present, it is relatively difficult for color newspapers to make comparisons. The most difficult is the color of newspapers. The styles of newspapers are different and the requirements are different. Some like colorful, some like elegant colors. Our basic requirement is no color cast, the color can be better restored, the overprinting is accurate, and the highlights are not netted. It is precisely these aspects that are most likely to cause problems in the printing of newspapers.
Through more than six months of trial evaluation, we found that there are indeed many problems in the printing of color newspapers, mainly in three areas; the level of technology needs to be improved, there are differences in understanding, and the selection of materials cannot fully meet the requirements for offset printing of newspapers. Take the storage of roll paper, it stands to reason that the roll should be placed vertically...
Cao Shizhong: On the whole, although there are more and more colorful newspapers in domestic newspapers and printing has gradually been digitized and standardized, some related problems have not received due attention and many operations are not standardized.
So what do you think a domestic newspaper printing company should do to improve newspaper printing quality?
Li Yaowen: In order to improve the printing quality of color newspapers, we must do a good job in prepress processing. For photo manuscripts, selection is the key and scanning is the key. The original manuscripts of the newspapers are now varied. They include reversed eyes, color photographs, printed materials that have been cut off from the pictorial, and digitized images taken by digital cameras. Therefore, if pre-press processing such as color separation is not well done . The printed effect is not satisfactory. The color newspaper picture is generally 100 lines/inch, black and white newspaper picture is 87 lines/inch. It is not that the higher the line number, the better. The line number is too high to be printed out.
To improve the printing quality of newspapers, newspaper leaders should have a correct understanding of the color requirements of the newspapers. There should be specific requirements for the original manuscripts of the pictures, and they should not be carried out on anything. In particular, foreign advertisements, the quality of the film is not good, it will affect D. Scanners should improve their skills as soon as possible. The printing plant should be basically fixed in the use of raw materials and should not be replaced frequently. Of course, in the film, printing, etc. must also meet the specifications.
Cao Shizhong: Training is also a big problem. The key issue of offset printing is to master the balance between water and ink. There are many operating workers in the domestic newspaper printing factories who have not received formal training on offset press operations. Newspaper printing is different from books and magazines. In recent years, domestic newspaper printing has developed quite rapidly, but it has not been able to keep up with newspaper printing technology training. So far, domestic printing colleges and universities have not set up special newspaper printing courses, nor have they been specifically responsible for newspaper printing and training departments, which is incompatible with the development of domestic newspaper printing.
Whether the emphasis on training has a great influence on the print quality of newspapers. The printing quality of Heilongjiang Daily has always been relatively stable because they attach great importance to technical training. For many years, all the operators have basically been trained for one round and a virtuous circle has been formed. Nowadays, the newly introduced newspaper printing equipment has a lot of computer control, and the requirements of the operators are even higher.
In addition to the above factors, there is also an important factor that affects the print quality of color newspapers, that is, management. The same equipment, management is good, printing quality is good; poor management, printing quality is not good. For example, the Shanghai Labor News, they manage very strict and very detailed. Although India printed newspapers, they standardized management according to the printing requirements of books and periodicals. Therefore, the printed newspapers are of good quality.
Li Yaowen: In general, the main problem in the current printing of newspapers is that printing is inaccurate, color cast, and high light at the same time. The main problem of black and white newspapers is that there are no pictures in the picture, and highlights and dark lines cannot be separated. In some places, the color newspapers like the color of conscience, and some black and white newspapers are too heavy, far exceeding the standards set by the state. In fact, color newspapers are not necessarily the brighter the better the color, the color should be natural. The black and white ink should not be too heavy, and efforts should be made in the production of pictures.
In the future, there will be more and more domestic color newspapers, and whether the work of the evaluation team will also be transferred to the color newspaper.
Cao Shizhong: In the future, our evaluation team will continue to do a good job in the evaluation of black and white newspapers. This year, after more than three in the past year, the number of daily newspapers has increased from 19 last year to 23, accounting for more than 37% of the total number of participants. In fact, many of the 62 judges who participated in the appraisal report now have color newspapers and have the ability to print newspapers. However, they did not participate in the competition every day. With the development of domestic color newspaper printing, our appraisal group will put more efforts into the appraisal of color newspapers. We will promote exchanges between printing companies through exchange meetings and seminars, and strive to make the domestic color newspaper printing more standardized. In addition, technical training is also an important task for the newspaper printing work committee this year. We will pass technical training to improve the technical level of operators and further improve the printing quality of domestic color newspapers.
Now, many newspapers and printing companies are concerned about the quality of newspaper printing. They attach great importance to the evaluation of the newspapers, and they also work hard to solve the existing problems. Here, we also express our sincere gratitude to the leaders and employees of the participating newspapers and printing companies, and we hope to continue to receive the support of everyone.
It seems that, as Mr. Cao Shizhong said, there is still much work to be done to improve the printing quality of domestic color newspapers. For example, in terms of proofing, most newspapers in the country are not proofread now. However, if direct plate-making techniques are adopted in the future, pre-press proofing of color newspapers will become an issue that newspaper printing companies cannot avoid. For another example, according to reports, in order to make the color newspaper printing more standardized, foreign countries have developed special test strips for newspaper printing. Through the test strips, the printing quality of newspaper owners can be controlled. We hope that everyone will pay attention to the printing quality of newspapers and look forward to the domestic universities and colleges that can cultivate the talents that meet the requirements of the newspaper printing industry. We look forward to the early realization of the digitization and standardization of color newspaper printing production.
