Research Institute of Biological Pretreatment of Corn Stalk Enzymatic Saccharification Makes New Breakthrough
Corn stalks are one of the main sources of agricultural waste in China. Each year, there are about 200 million tons, most of them are directly discarded or burned on site, causing waste of resources and environmental pollution. Corn stalks are mainly composed of three major components of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. After enzymatic hydrolysis and biotransformation, biomass energy such as ethanol and butanol can be generated, achieving about 30% energy conversion. Liu Xiaofeng's research group of the Applied and Environmental Microbiology Research Center, Chengdu Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences used a highly efficient strain, Trametes hirsute Y9, to conduct pretreatment studies on corn stover. The results showed that after 42 days of treatment, the degradation of lignin reached 71.49%, and the enzymolysis rate of the treated raw material reached 73.99%. Electron microscopy scanning of the pretreated materials revealed that the pretreated straw surface became rough, the gaps between cellulose fibers were clearly visible, and many holes were formed. The study also proved that the amount of enzymatic saccharification is inversely proportional to the lignin content, and has little correlation with cellulose and hemicellulose. The research results were published in INTERNATIONAL BIODETERIORATION & BIODEGRADATION (2011, 65: 931-938).
