Recently, a U.S. institute researched and developed a plastic film made of potato and whey that can be biodegraded. The biggest advantage of this plastic film is that it can be decomposed into lactic acid that is harmless to the environment.
According to reports, the method for manufacturing plastic films is to first convert the potatoes that have been discarded after forming whey into enzymes and convert them into glucose syrups, and then to form lactic acid-containing liquids through bacterial fermentation. The cheese in the liquid is separated by electrodialysis and heated to evaporate the water, leaving behind the polylactic acid molecules that can be made into films and coatings. This made plastic film can be used as a fresh-keeping bag and replaces the packaging material coated with polyethylene and waterproof wax.
