In theory, the color gamut of digital proofing is larger than the color gamut of printing. Digital proofing can completely simulate all the colors of the printed matter and achieve 100% matching. But in fact, this is not the case. There are certain errors in the matching algorithm between the two color gamuts, and digital proofing and printing have many uncertain factors that are difficult to control.

First analyze the principle of digital proofing.

Digital proofing uses CMYK four-color ink to simulate the color of printing. The hue of printing ink and printing ink is different, so each ink color is simulated with a different ratio of CMYK ink, even for single-color ink. For example, the printed monochromatic magenta is synthesized with the CMYK four-color ink of the printer, instead of only the red ink simulation.

Second, analyze the color matching process of digital proofing.

The adjustment process of digital proofing is: first determine a normal printing state, print the test sample in this state to obtain the printing source ICC color characteristic file, and then use this printing source ICC to debug the digital proofing, so that the proofing sample is as close as possible to the printing sample. After the adjustment is completed and the relevant proofing parameters are determined, the digital proofing is used as the printing follow-up, and the printing is followed by the digital proof. Therefore, the accuracy of the printing source ICC file has a great influence on the digital proofing and coloring effects. If the obtained print ICC color characteristic file does not reflect the normal production state of the printing machine, the digital proofing transferred is also in an abnormal state. It will be difficult to print the sample afterwards.
